Ukrainian community of software engineers and IT specialists, DOU has recently released the results of their annual IT job market survey 2018, and this is our wrap-up of its key findings and most thought-provoking highlights.
As the survey suggests, the number of specialists employed in the Ukrainian IT sector has exceeded 160,000, which marks a 26% increase from the previous year. Over the past 2 years, the Ukrainian IT industry volume has increased by a whopping 60%.

The number of job openings published on DOU alone has increased 1.5 times over the year: from 3,111 to 4,606 a month.
In general, the number of applications increased by 23% compared to the last year: from 270,000 to 330,000. The number of organizations posting their open vacancies increased by 38%: from 2,419 to 3,339.

In 2018, the most sought-after skills were front end development, QA, and PHP: the share of these three categories combined accounts for 31% of all the vacancies published.

Salaries in the Ukrainian IT Sector
On average, all tech salaries in Ukraine rose by around 15-20% over 2018, while senior Ruby on Rails developers enjoyed 27% and junior QA specialists – 25% increase in salary.

For the first time since 2014, there is an upward trend in junior and middle QA engineer salaries: junior QA and middle QA specialists’ salaries increased from $400 to $500 and from $1,100 to $1,300 respectively.
Last year, senior RoR developers saw the highest surge in salary: +$800.
On average, Project Managers’ salary rose by $200 over yesteryear. This is the first positive change in the PM remuneration trend since December 2013 (see image below).

Salaries vary substantially not only by work experience but also by city. A Kyiv-based PM makes twice as much as a PM in Odessa or Lviv does. Surprisingly enough, junior Java developers earn more in Odessa, while in Lviv, a mid-level Swift developer can make $900 more than their same-skilled colleague working in Kyiv.
Speaking about social benefits and perks provided by employers, the top 3 are as follows:

- Lounge zone availability in the office: 18%

- Unlimited paid vacation (e.g. sabbatical): 25%
- Interest-free material aid (e.g. loans): 19.8%
- More extrinsic rewards: 18%
